<p>Moshe Sharon bezeichnet sich als Palästinenser: Geboren in Haifa während der Mandatszeit, stamme er aus einer Familie, die seit dem 17. Jahrhundert in der Gegend von Haifa lebte.<sup id="cite_ref-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>
</p><p>Er studierte ab 1965 Islamwissenschaften an der <a href="Hebr%C3%A4ische_Universit%C3%A4t_Jerusalem" title="Hebräische Universität Jerusalem">Hebräischen Universität Jerusalem</a> und der <a href="University_of_London" title="University of London">University of London</a>; er war ein akademischer Schüler von <a href="Bernard_Lewis" title="Bernard Lewis">Bernard Lewis</a><sup id="cite_ref-3" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-3"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>3<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> und David Ayalon, dessen Forschungsschwerpunkt die Sozialgeschichte des mamlukischen Reichs war.<sup id="cite_ref-4" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-4"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>4<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Im Jahr 1971 promovierte er an der Hebräischen Universität.
</p><p>Parallel zu seiner akademischen Karriere als Professor für Islamwissenschaften an der Hebräischen Universität und der <a href="Bar-Ilan-Universit%C3%A4t" title="Bar-Ilan-Universität">Bar-Ilan-Universität</a> verlief Sharons militärische Karriere; er erreichte den Rang eines Obersts und leitete die Abteilung für Arabische Angelegenheiten der <a href="Israelische_Verteidigungsstreitkr%C3%A4fte" title="Israelische Verteidigungsstreitkräfte">Israelischen Verteidigungsstreitkräfte</a> (IDF).<sup id="cite_ref-5" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-5"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>5<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup><sup id="cite_ref-6" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-6"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>6<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>
</p><p>Bis 1979 diente Sharon Premierminister <a href="Menachem_Begin" title="Menachem Begin">Menachem Begin</a> als politischer Berater.<sup id="cite_ref-7" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-7"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>7<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Er war Berater des Außenministers <a href="Mosche_Arens" title="Mosche Arens">Moshe Arens</a> und beriet <a href="Benjamin_Ben-Eliezer" title="Benjamin Ben-Eliezer">Benjamin Ben-Eliezer</a> während dessen Zeit als Regierungskoordinator für die <a href="Jud%C3%A4a_und_Samaria" title="Judäa und Samaria">„zivile“ Militärverwaltung in den besetzten Palästinensergebieten</a> (1983/1984). </p><p>In den israelischen Medien wird Sharon oft als Islamexperte angefragt. <p>Sharon ist Experte für arabische Inschriften, bekannt insbesondere als Hauptverfasser mehrerer Bände des <i>Corpus inscriptionum Arabicarum Palaestinae</i> seit 1990. Ein weiterer Forschungsschwerpunkt ist die Geschichte des <a href="Bahaitum" title="Bahaitum">Bahaitums</a>.
